He was one of the greatest legends to walk the earth. Please pray for this family during this heartbreaking time.

He is known as an author, musician, civil rights activist and university professor. You may also remember that he made a late-life conversion to Judaism as well.

The wonderful Julius Lester has died at age 78 according to multiple reports. Lian Amaris, Julius’ daughter, confirmed the news to The Associated Press on Friday.

She shared that her father passed away on Thursday peacefully. Unfortunately, she did not explain the cause of his death at this time.

Along with posting the news of her father’s death she asked that everyone respect her family’s privacy during this time of mourning. They are requesting no emails, texts or phone calls from any fans at this time.

Of course, it is an overwhelming time of  loss for the family. Although he lived a long and beautiful life, it is never easy to say goodbye to someone as great as Lester.

Lester was a professor of both black studies and Jewish studies at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst for more than 30 years before retiring in 2003. The University released a statement after hearing about his heartbreaking death.

“UMass Amherst is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of professor Julius Lester. Who enriched our university community and the world as a teacher, scholar and writer.” A university spokesman said in a statement. “His legacy includes being a recipient of the university’s Distinguished Teaching Award as well as the Chancellor’s Medal, a campus honor bestowed on individuals who have rendered exemplary and extraordinary service to the university.”
