Hollywood legend just died after a long battle with lung cancer. Prayers…

He is known as a legendary horror filmmaker. George A. Romero has died at age 77.

One of his most creative and respected works was “Night of the Living Dead” which catapulted the zombie film genre. According to reports he died due to complications with lung cancer.

Romero passed away on Sunday in his sleep surrounded by his family. The score to his favorite film “The Quiet Man” was playing in the background, according to the L.A. Times who had spoken with his producer, Peter Grunwald.

“Romero died while listening to the score of one his favorite films, 1952’s “The Quiet Man,” with his wife, Suzanne Desrocher Romero, and daughter, Tina Romero, at his side, the family said.”

Although most critics trashed the movie “Night of the Living Dead” audiences loved it. Daily Variety even said that the movie “unrelieved sadism … which casts serious aspersions on the integrity of its makers.”

Audiences said that Romero’s work so distinct. They loved that there were sociopolitical messages in his films. This is what made his movies so noteworthy, starting with the casting of that first “Living Dead” picture.

“I think the reason it got noticed was the fact that we used an African American actor in a role that didn’t need to be played by an African American actor, and then he gets gunned down by this posse,” Romero said, noting that the role was originally written for a white man. On the night of that drive to New York City, he said, “we heard on the radio that [the Rev. Martin Luther] King had been assassinated. So now all of a sudden the power of the film was ratcheted up that much more.”

Another reason audiences loved Homer’s films so much was because they were so gory. Not many producers would allow their films to have so much gore, but it’s something that Romero never shied away from.

Romero never let society tell him how his films should be. He always branched out on his own to come up with new, creative ideas.

This is what set him apart from the others.

Prayers for the family.

RIP
