He is a legendary former pro-football quarterback. Vito “Babe” Parilli has died according to reports.
The New England Patriots announced the devastating news on Saturday, July 15, 2017. He was 87 years old and he will be missed dearly.
Parilli played professional football for 15 years. The 15 years were split between 5 teams in the NFL and AFL.
“He was Joe Namath’s back-up when the New York Jets won the Super Bowl in 1969. He also set a franchise record for most touchdown passes in a season for the Patriots with 31 in 1964. That record stood until Tom Brady broke it in 2007 with 50.”
He played college football for the University of Kentucky under legendary coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. He was an All-American in 1950 and 1951.
The next year things really hit off for the football star. Therefore, in 1952 Parilli was drafted to the Green Bay Packers. He played for the team throughout the 1950s.
He also played for the Cleveland Browns and Ottawa Rough Riders of the Canadian Football League. Not long after in 1960 he was signed by the Oakland Raiders. Eventually, he was traded to the Boston Patriots in 1961.
“During his tenure with the Patriots he became one of the AFL’s top quarterbacks, and was selected to the All-Star team three times and was named the AFL Comeback Player of the Year in 1966. He then signed with the New York Jets where he finished his career, retiring in 1970.”
When he was done playing football, he turned to being a coach. His coaching career that lasted from 1973 – 1997. Parilli was considered one of the legends in the football world.
In 1982, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
