Carl Edwards is continuing to stun us all with updates.
In January, just weeks before the start of the 2017 season, Carl Edwards announced that he would no longer be driving the No. 19 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing. In fact, he wouldn’t be driving any race car this season.
We were all left in complete shock. How could one of the most well known just up and quit the sport that he loves? We immediately wanted answers.
In a press conference, Edwards answered one of our biggest questions, which was “WHY?”. He of course said that a lot of it had to do with the future and wanting to be healthy. Edwards was also sure to let us know that he was completely satisfied with his career, regardless of whether he got a championship win or not.
“The reasons are pretty straightforward. I am truly personally satisfied with my career. I know you’re thinking ‘you don’t have a championship’, but I don’t race just for the trophies. I feel accomplished. I know when I sit in that racecar I’m the best I can be. I’m really satisfied with that. Second, this is an all-encompassing thing. I need to take time right now and devote it to people and things that are important to me. The third reason is my health. I can stand here healthy after all the racing I’ve done and all the stupid stuff I’ve done in race cars. I’m a sharp guy and I want to be a sharp guy in 30 years. Those risks are something I want to minimize.”
Even after that however, we’ve all been wondering if any more “truths” would be revealed. People don’t just up and quit for something like “I want to stay healthy.”
So of course, we’ve all been fishing for more answers. And out of that, rumors have formed. Weeks of rumors! The latest rumor was that Edwards would be returning in 2018 with one of the top teams in NASCAR.
FOX Sports reached out to him and confronted him about the rumor, and that’s when Edwards dropped a BOMB. He put an end to the rumors once and for all by completely denying every rumor. He definitely will NOT be returning to racing… Ever.
“Like I said at the press conference, I had no racing plans then and do not now. There is no hidden agenda — those three reasons are it. No plans.”
Who knew those reasons would be strong enough to make him quit racing forever? The NASCAR community is definitely in shock.
We sure will miss you, Carl.
