The Panthers’ new song is “We are family.”
One of Carolina’s biggest goals this offseason is to create a solid line in front of Cam Newton. It seems the team targeted a relative of one of its most solid offensive lineman.
Matt Kalil, brother of Panthers Pro Bowl center Ryan Kalil, has signed on to be the next left tackle for Carolina. Terms were not immediately available. Kalil came from the Minnesota Vikings where he was the fourth overall pick in 2012. He had hip surgery last season that caused him to miss some time.

Over his career, Kalil has started 66 games at left tackle, making the Pro Bowl as a rookie. Signing him gives Carolina a huge upgrade at the tackle position, and means that should Michael Oher return from his concussion protocol, he’ll slide into the Right Tackle slot. This is a huge signing that will offer Newton more protection and help with the running game. Kalil is a little banged up, but he is still young and likely came at a bargain price.
Is this the signing that will make sure Newton stays on his feet and not on his back, or do the Panthers need a few more pieces?
