The heart of a football player doesn’t matter if you are 7-feet tall or if you are 5-foot-6.
When it comes to heart, two of the Cowboys younger players carry a huge amount of it. There might not be a lot that second-year tight end Rico Gathers and rookie wide receiver Ryan Switzer share, it certainly isn’t their size that the two bring to the field. Gathers is a massive human being at an impressive 6-foot-6 and 290 pounds, Switzer on the other hand is 5-foot-8 and 181 pounds. However, both players have a huge heart on the football field and neither will allow you to tell them that they don’t belong.

Per bloggingtheboys.com, both Gathers and Switzer are hoping and expected to have an impact during this upcoming 2017 football season. Gathers is the backup to Jason Witten at the tight end position due to the injuries to James Hanna and Geoff Swaim. Switzer is a threat to make this team through special teams with his return skills, but that might not be the only way he has an impact on this football team.

Even if the other tight ends are able to come back and be healthy come training camp, Gathers might have shown enough by then to guarantee that backup spot behind the Cowboys veteran tight end. Gathers was able to learn a lot in his first year in Dallas on the practice squad catching passes from Tony Romo. He now is transferring that to the field with Dak Prescott, if he can continue his growth into an NFL tight end, there is no idea the upside that this kid could have in this league.
Sage football advice from Scott Linehan, on what Rico Gathers can do: "if they're playing man across the board, throw it to the 6'8 guy."

With Switzer, he is almost a guarantee to make this team as a special team’s player and give a boost to the return game for the Cowboys. They have been trying to get that out of Lucky Whitehead, but seem to have it now with the former North Carolina standout wide receiver. In the same mold as fan favorite Cole Beasley, Switzer will also have the chance to have an impact in different packages on offense as well.
I have been itching to lay my eyes on the former basketball star in an actual game atmosphere since Jerry Jones and the Cowboys took the gamble on him in the final round of the 2016 NFL draft. He has so much upside with his athletic ability and size that he has. With the recent basketball stars turned tight ends that this league has seen, I think Gathers can be another one to add to the list.
Will he turn into the next Jimmy Graham or the next Antonio Gates? No, he will be the first Rico Gathers in the NFL. He has the chance to be special for this team as he is a matchup nightmare for any defense, it’s just a matter of putting it together on the football field, just like he did on the basketball court.
Who are you looking forward to seeing most in training camp, Gathers or Switzer?
