Cowboys Might Be Looking For Depth At LB

Dallas Cowboys

You can never have too many linebackers in this league.

When it comes to the best teams in this league, they carry depth at the crucial positions.  Linebacker is one of those key positions.

Dallas is set at linebacker for the most part, but the uncertainty of Anthony Hitchens makes this off-season important.  Dallas needs to make sure Hitchens is back for the 2018, and they had said they will make re-signing him a priority.  You can say all you want about making a player a priority, but Hitchens will likely draw planet of attention in free agency.

The Kansas City Chiefs might have helped the Cowboys get their veteran depth at LB!

The Chiefs don’t plan on bringing back their veteran linebacker back for the 2018 season.  Kansas City will allow Derrick Johnson to hit the open market (via Adam Schefter).

“Chiefs do not plan to bring back Derrick Johnson; want to go younger at LB. So there’ will be one more veteran LB on the market.”

Johnson is a player that can come in a help a team immediately with his knowledge and veteran leadership.  He would be a perfect fit for this Cowboys team, as well as another veteran leader to play alongside Sean Lee.

If the Cowboys are true to their normal off-season plans, the will get a deal done with Hitchens.  Taking care of players in-house is usually top priority.  Hitchens, Sean Lee, and Jaylon Smith would continue to be the trio to start for this team.  However, signing Johnson in free agency would allow Dallas to continue to ease Smith back in the lineup.

The 2017 season proved that maybe Smith did a little too much, but he was forced to have a bigger impact.  He looked good for a player with his injury but showed that he still has some work to do.  Reports are that his drop foot is leaving, but I would still like to ease him back for another year.  The addition of Johnson would allow that, both players could play a 50/50 role for this defense in 2018.

Should Dallas go after Johnson in free agency?  Or would you rather the team concentrate elsewhere in free agency, and find that LB in the draft?
