Cowboys Release Nolan Carroll

Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys have made a move early Wednesday morning in the secondary.

Nolan Carroll has been out due to a concussion he suffered during the game against the Denver Broncos.  The defensive play over the last two weeks had to be a major reason that Carroll is out.  They have played decent at cornerback, but the play by one rookie has been great.

The rookie play of Jourdan Lewis was a deciding factor in the release of one veteran CB!

Lewis has looked great at times, therefore, Dallas felt it was time to move on from the veteran, Nolan Carroll.  This comes as the team is currently in their bye week (via Mike Garafolo).

“Cowboys are releasing CB Nolan Carroll, source says.  He’s been out with a concussion.  Jourdan Lewis has stepped up.”

The move likely has more to do with the play of the rookie out of Michigan.  Since returning from his hamstring injury, Lewis has been great in coverage.  The defense may look to be struggling at times, but for the most part, Lewis has been on point in his coverage.  However, one play against the Packers will continue to haunt he young cornerback.  But the body of work should be viewed on his play over the single play last Sunday.

The Cowboys brought in Carroll to help in the secondary as a veteran at cornerback.  He said the main reason he signed with the Cowboys was simple, he wanted to play for a contender (via Bleacher Report).

“It’s really not about the offer,” Carroll said. “I just want to win. I appreciate the opportunity Coach [Jason] Garrett and Mr. [Jerry] Jones have given me to come to a prestigious organization like this and be a part of a winning tradition and winning culture around here. I just see it as me being another piece to help the team win.”

Since coming to the Cowboys, Carroll has been a disappointment!

He had five tackles, along with zero passes defensed and interceptions in the first two game.  Add that to the concussion that he is currently dealing with, and it is a recipe for the release.

Look for the Cowboys to consider a move to safety with Chidobe Awuzie.  That move might put the best athletes on the field together in the secondary.  Orlando Scandrick, Anthony Brown, and Lewis locking up the corner spots, with Awuzie and Byron Jones covering the back end of the defense at safety.

It shouldn’t be hard for Carroll to find another team, as soon as he clears the concussion protocol!
