With Lawrence Timmons gone, the perception is that the team was going to give Vince Williams a shot at inside linebacker. He has paid his dues and signed an extension last year that makes him an inexpensive option. It only makes sense to give him a shot at the job. That is unless you can get someone better—like Dont’a Hightower.
Hightower, who has played for the New England Patriots for the last five seasons, is making the rounds as a free agent. He has already visited with the New York Jets and Tennessee Titans. Rumor has it he will be paying the Steelers a visit in the near future as well.
The Steelers could certainly use a linebacker of his caliber on the roster. Hightower is considered the best available linebacker on the free agent market. He has the kind of athleticism and versatility that enable to stay on the field for all three downs. Last year he made the Pro Bowl for the first time.

While it would be quite nice to sign him, chances are he will be too expensive for the Steelers. The great thing about being considered one of the best at what you do is the paycheck that comes with the praise. Sportrac.com projects his market value for a four-year contract to be $41.09 million.
New England is said to still be interested in resigning him, but the Patriots are notorious bargain shoppers. Even though they have plenty of salary cap space, they will not pay anyone more than they have to. Tennessee has room to spare as well and could overpay him if that’s what it takes to land him.
But if he still wants to win a Super Bowl next year, the Steelers would be a better bet than the Titans.
